Pulmonary A&P Flashcards
what is external respiration?
ventilation and gas exchange in lungs
what is internal respiration?
O2 utilization and gas exchange in tissues
what 4 things can limit diaphragm displacement? (“SOAP”)
Size of various GI organs
Obesity
Ascites
Pregnancy
contraction of external intercostals pulls the lower rib ___ and ___ toward the upper rib
up, out
how are the fibers of the external intercostals oriented?
inferomedially
contraction of internal intercostals pulls the ribs ___ and ___
downward, inward
how are the fibers of the internal intercostals oriented?
posterior-inferiorly and medially
how do we calculate lung compliance?
Δ lung volume / Δ transpulmonary pressure (ΔV / ΔP)
what is a shunt / what happens?
-Perfusion occurs, but there is very limited ventilation
-Excess perfusion = R to L shunt (blood not oxygenated)
-V/Q should be lower (ex. COPD)
what is a dead space / what happens?
-Ventilation occurs, but there is limited perfusion
-Excess ventilation = physiologic dead space
-V/Q should be higher (ex. PE)
what happens when you have increased CO2 in the blood?
Increased CO3 and H+
Reduced blood pH (more acidic)
CO2 retention → become hypercapnic
Hypoventilation (dec RR) and reduced exhalation volumes
what happens when you have decreased CO2 in the blood?
Decreased CO3 and H+
Increased blood pH (more alkalosis)
Greater amounts of CO2 are breathed out → become hypocapnic
Hyperventilation (inc RR) and reduced exhalation volumes
