They make items easier to lift by changing the direction of the force
What is a block and tackle system?
When two or more pulleys are used together
What does using two or more pulleys together do?
Reduces the magnitude of force required to lift a load
What will a block and tackle system with 2 pulleys do?
Halve the required input force to lift the load:

What do belt and pulley systems do?
They transfer rotary motion and force from the driver pulley to the driven pulley

The belt needs to remain taut, so they are often made from rubber to reduce slippage
What does crossing the belt do?
Changes the direction of the output movement
