watch for confusion in older adults
male specific SE are reversible

used for limited time periods, used when H2 blockers don’t work
take 30 min. before meals, preferably in the morning
assess for black tarry stools; diarrhea, abdominal pain and persistent HA
take for 4-8 weeks

magnesium hydroxide (Milk of Magnesia) DIARRHEA
aluminum hydroxide (amphogel) CONSTIPATION
calcium carbonate (TUMS) CONSTIPATION

neutralize acidity of stomach contents
Antacids Nursing Interventions
can impair absorption of other drugs (oral); check drugs pt is taking
if more than 2 weeks of therapy, notify prescriber
drink at least 2 oz of water to make sure it reaches stomach
monitor electrolytes, urinary pH, Ca and phosphate lvls
don’t give to kids unless approved to
avoid aluminum containing drugs with bone problems in elderly and Alzheimer’s

sucralfate (Carafate)

don’t give bismuth subsalicylate to kids due to aspirin

same as nvdc

speed up emptying time of stomach; blocks dopamine 2 receptors to increase motility
