What is the biopsychosocial model of medicine?

Biological- physiology, genetics, pathogens

Biomedical vs biopsychosocial approach
Biomedical only looks at illness in terms of biological and physiological processes, treatment only physical. Better mortality rates.
Biopsychosocial looks holistically not just physical.
What is evidenced based medicine?
Turning clinical problems into questions, then systematically locating and appraising and use research findings as basis to make decisions.

What is public health?
Art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organised efforts of society.

Health improvement- smoking cessation, MH
Health protection- infectious diseases, screening, vaccines
Public health- prioritisation, needs assessment, service design
Features of public health?
Primary prevention- before people get the disease
Secondary prevention- people at risk or start getting symptoms
Tertiary prevention- reducing impact of ongoing illness or injury, managing symptoms.
Examples of the different types of preventions?
Primary- campaigns and ads, immunisations, safe habits eg safe sex, info before get disease
Secondary- specific advice, screening, exercise programmes
Tertiary- manage symptoms with drugs and support groups, rehab.
