dissociation-altered sense of reality
intrusion- intrusive memories, flashbacks, intense dress
avoidance- avoid thoughts/ feelings associated with events, avoids reminders of event
negative mood- inability to experience happiness, satisfaction or loving feelings
arousal- sleep difficulty, irritability, anger, poor concentration
duration of ASD
4 weeks
Aetiology of PTSD
genetics neurochemistry: serotonin noradrenaline opiate system neuroendocrine- cortisol social/environmental factors: support endemic violence role of media natural causes vs human violence meaning making of traumatic experiences

pre- family history lower education and intelligence age gender race/ ethnicity previous trauma during and after trauma trauma severity lack of support dissociation additional life stressors ASD
therapy for PTSD
Prolonged exposure (PE) Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) Cognitive therapy for PTSD (CT-PTSD) Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Narrative Exposure therapy (NET) DONT GIVE BENZOS give SSRIs and venlafaxine
goals pf acute stress management
reduce exposure to stress restore physiological needs provide access to information locate source of support emphasize expectation of returning to normal
