six symptoms of GAD
- muscle tension
- irritability
- sleep disturbance
- difficulty concentrating or mind going blank
- being easily fatigued
- restlessness or on edge
define GAD
excessive anxiety and worry occurring more days than not for at least 6 months
the individual finds it difficult to control the worry
the symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning
how many symptoms is anxiety and worry associated with
3 or more out of the 6 symptoms
criteria for diagnosing GAD
Disturbance is not better explained by another mental disorder
disturbance is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance or another medical condition( hyperthyroidism)
what is a panic attack
it is an abrupt surge of intense fear or intense discomfort that reaches a peak within minutes and during which time four of the symptoms occur
NB: the surge can happen in a calm or anxious state
symptoms of a panic attack
fear of dying fear of losing control derealization paresthesias chills feeling dizzy, unsteady, light-headed or faint nausea or abdominal distress chest pain or discomfort feelings of choking sensations of shortness of breath trembling or shaking sweating palpitations
panic disorder
recurrent unexpected attacks
panic disorder criteria
at least one of the attacks has been followed by 1 month or more of one or both of the following
- persistent concern or worry about additional panic attacks or their consequences
- a significant maladaptive change in behavior related to attacks
exclusion criteria of panic disorder
the disturbance is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance or another medical condition
the disturbance is not better explained by another mental disorder
social anxiety disorder
marked fear or anxiety about one or more social situations in which the individual is exposed to possible scrutiny by others
symptoms of SAD
fear, avoidance is persistent lasting 6 months or more
the fear is out of proportion than the actual threat
social situations are avoided or endured with marked fear or anxiety
social situations always provoke fear or anxiety
individual fears he or she will act in a way or show
anxiety symptoms that will be negatively evaluated
criteria of exclusion for SAD
not attributable to physiological effects of a substance or medical condition, another medical condition
specific phobia
marked fear or anxiety about a specific object or situation
symptoms of specific phobia
phobic object always provokes immediate fear or anxiety
object is actively avoided or endured with intense fear or anxiety
fear is out of proportion to the actual danger posed by the object
fear or avoidance is persistent, typically lasting for 6 month
fear causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social occupational or other important areas of functioning
criteria of exclusion for specific phobia
disturbance is not better explained by the symptoms of another mental disorder, including fear, anxiety and avoidance of situations associated with panic-like symptoms or other incapacitating symptoms, objects or situations related to obsessions, PTSD or social situations
