What is pterygium?
A
- Triangular wedge of fibrovascular conjunctival tissue extending over the corneal surface from medial/lateral canthus
- Often arises from a pinguecula (yellowing patch/ bump on the conjunctiva)

Risk factors of pterygium
A
- Prolonged exposure to UV radiation (sunlight)
- Chronic dryness of eye
- Dust exposure

Symptoms of pterygium
A
Majority asymptomatic
- Dry eyes
- Astigmatism
- Obstruction of visual axis
- Cosmesis

Indications for pterygium surgery
A
- Visual axis is involved
- High astigmatism
- Cosmesis

Management of pterygium
A
Majority can be treated conservatively
- Sunglasses
Surgery: Surgical excision of pterygium with conjunctival autograft
