What is pterygium?

A
  • Triangular wedge of fibrovascular conjunctival tissue extending over the corneal surface from medial/lateral canthus
  • Often arises from a pinguecula (yellowing patch/ bump on the conjunctiva)

Risk factors of pterygium

A
  • Prolonged exposure to UV radiation (sunlight)
  • Chronic dryness of eye
  • Dust exposure

Symptoms of pterygium

A

Majority asymptomatic
- Dry eyes
- Astigmatism
- Obstruction of visual axis
- Cosmesis

A
  • Visual axis is involved
  • High astigmatism
  • Cosmesis

Management of pterygium

A

Majority can be treated conservatively
- Sunglasses
Surgery: Surgical excision of pterygium with conjunctival autograft
