A
- stoma = mouth
- gnathic = jaw

A
- templomandibular joint

What components are considered part of the stomatognathic system?
A
- posterior cervical muscles
- mastication muscles
- phonation (speaking) muscles
- oral, facial, hyoid and cervical myo-fascia
- SCM, TMJ, upper cervical joints and SCJ

What signs and symptoms of stomatognathic maladaption might patients experience?
A
- post whiplash colicky jaw
- dizziness + HAs following dental work
- HAs and ANS disturbances with chronic bruxism (grinding teeth)
- occlusal (contact of teeth) may be seen in poorly compensating scoliotic patients

Describe the structure of the TMJ
A
- condylar synovial joint
- fibrocartilage articular surface
- interacrticular disc - withstands repetitive movements
- 3 ligaments: lateral temporal-mandibular + sphenoid-mandibular + stylo-mandibular

- temporalis

- gravity: need to be able to relax closing muscles to open jaw
