The OC Exhibits must update the OC Investigation and 2IC on which 3 matters:
‑ what exhibits have been found, and their movements
‑ the results of any exhibit examinations
‑ whether any further enquiries are required.
The OC Exhibits must not accept an exhibit unless it meets which 3 criteria:
(1) Exhibit label contains EXHIBIT NUMBER and OPERATION NAME
(2) CORRECTLY PACKAGED and SEALED
(3) Properly prepared and PRESERVED for STORAGE
Are exhibits allowed in the Investigation Headquarters?
No
Where/when are decisions relating to selection of particular types of forensic examination and prioritisation made?
At the FORENSIC STRATEGY MEETING.
Where the OC Investigation will establish its relevance to the investigation.

What topics may be included in a FORENSIC STRATEGY MEETING:
(List 4)
(1) What EXAMINATIONS ESR and others could conduct on exhibits
(2) PRIORITY
(3) WORK NEEDED to assist RECONSTRUCTION
(4) A PLAN for such work
(5) An AGREED RECONSTRUCTION of the events relevant to the crime
What is the first FORENSIC STRATEGY MEETING likely to be about?
Discussing fragile evidence likely to be disturbed when moving the body.
Where does the OC Exhibits record decisions taken about the types of examinations to be conducted and the priority allocated to the examination of each exhibit?

What 7 steps must the OC Exhibits take when forwarding an exhibit for examination:
(1) CONFIRM DECISION through the FS Meeting
(2) RECORD in IMT or PROP all decisions
(3) AUTHORITY from OC Investigation
(4) Prepare necessary DOCUMENTS e.g. POL143 for ESR
(5) CORRECTLY PACKAGED
(6) PROMPT DELIVERY
(7) INFORM RECIPIENT if examination no longer required
What must the OC Exhibits do when receiving the Results of an examination?
INFORM the OC Investigation (do not assume they already know).
What must be displayed when exhibits are photographed (In a police studio)

Are there circumstances where the defence may examine exhibits?
Yes, under section 19(1) of the Criminal Disclosure Act 2008.
Who is responsible for transporting exhibits to and from the court during a trial?
OC Exhibits
What is meant by CHAIN OF CUSTODY of exhibits?
It is a record of every person who has had CUSTODY of the exhibit from its seizure to its production in Court.
Its important for admissibility.
While an exhibit was under their control, each person with custody of the exhibit must be able to demonstrate in IMT or PROP:
(List 4 things that must be recorded in relation to chain of custody)
‑ WHEN the exhibit was RECEIVED and from whom
‑ WHERE and how the exhibit was STORED
‑ How the exhibit was MOVED form one place to another
‑ How the exhibit has been TREATED, safeguarded and preserved
‑ when and WHY they TRANSFERRED custody of an exhibit to another person..
This is called maintaining the ‘chain of evidence’.
The exhibit NUMBERING SYSTEM must be:
(1) CONSISTENT
(2) DELEGATED to staff who are able to utilise them
(3) Cope with MULTIPLE SCENES
(4) ENCOMPASS all exhibits including MEK, Samples, Docs etc.
How many digits are advisable for exhibit numbers and why?
Minimum of 5.
So they don’t produce false hits during searches.
How are ‘CAME FROM’ exhibits numbered?
Sequentially:
(1) 10708 - The box
(2) 10709 - The bag in the box
(3) 10710 - The cannabis in the bag
The cannabis will have the location where found, “Came from 10709”.
What happens to the original packaging when an exhibit is unsealed then repackaged?
The original packaging is included.
List 4 DUTIES in the OC Exhibit Duties Table:
(1) Utilise IMT
(2) Use 5 DIGIT NUMBERING
(3) BRIEF each OC Phase with number ranges and SOPs
(4) Ensure proper PROCESSES are carried out (Handling and Record keeping
(5) Maintain CHAIN OF CUSTODY
(6) Provide OC investigation with FWS
