PT School-aged and Adolescents Flashcards
PT School Aged and Adolescents
Focus moves from outpatient to school based
Enrolled in typical schools but may need adaptations and therapy services
May need modifications for mobility due to increased distances
Exam
School PT:
determine type of training and adaptive equipment needed to achieve educational objectives
Functional ADL skills assessed- want to determine efficiency and need for adaptations
School Function Assessment use to help determine services needed in IEP
The Activity Scale for Kids (ASK)- self report tool used to determine where child is having greatest limitations at home and community
Goals
Orchestrate care if unable to complete ADL’s independently
Educate family on encouraging child to be independent
Independence in mobility and keeping up with peers
–ability to participate in 1-3 playground activities during recess
ROM- not an educational goals but important to maximize long term function (increased sitting at school may increase hip/knee contractures)
–growth spurt and increased time in sitting can result in loss of extension in knees/hips
–loss of ability to walk may occur in teen years, especially if not diligent about wearing night splints–require surgery to regain walking skills
Intervention Strategies
Adaptive equipment for ADL’s
Modifications to classroom desks and chairs
Adherence to splinting and stretching bc may lose some degree of motion due to growth
Prevention of regression of skills
Have child help plan schedule— improved adherence
Adaptive PE
Speed and safety of independent mobility–may need supplemental mobility options for energy conservation and safety
