Behaviorism Approach
Focus on observable human behaviors.
Demonstrate and have patient demonstrate back.
Positive reinforcement for the effective behaviors.
Withdraw rewards for the ineffective behaviors.
Use feedback.

Constructivist Approach
Patient engages in the problem solving. Therapist asks patient what they think adn the patient gives their opinion The therapist is just the facilitator. Patient obtains a sense of confidence. Higher retention in learning
Emotionally able
Patient has the cognition, psychosocial resources, and is able to communicate
Physically able
Sensory input, motor output, flexibility between the two
Intrinsic values to be motivated
Personally valued
Interesting
Enjoyable
Extrinsic values to be motivated
Want to please the PT and others in their life
Return to work and leisure activities
Facilitating intrinsic motivations involves the following
Connectedness (a sense of trust)
Self Efficacy (competency)
Autonomy (independence)
Maximize motivation
Encourage patient to participate
Give them opportunities to participate
Allow them to direct their plan of care under our supervision
