- Teaching competency and evidence of expertise
- Directors of clinical education — 3 years of clinical experience
- A well defined ongoing scholarly agenda
- Record of service consistent with expectations of the program and institution
- Has doctoral preparation
- Includes an effective blend of individuals with doctoral preparation and individuals with clinical specialization sufficient to meet program goals and expected program outcomes
- Has current PT license.
How can you be a community educator
INFORMAL — health far, career day, in-services for other professionals
FORMAL — Continuing Education Provider that offers CEUs. Must provide education through an approved Continuing Education Provider, need written objectives, provide your CV, and need references available to be one.
What is a CI
Individual who directly instructs and supervises students during their clinical learning experience.
Assumptions of CIs
- Relationship between academic program and clinical site is voluntary
- CI is student’s role model
- Clinical environment is designed to promote adult learning
- Clinical educators address all essential areas of PT and PTA education
- Clinical educators provide an environment that fosters professionalism and encourages the development of an autonomous and competent clinician.
Guidelines for CI from APTA
- Possess a current license in state where providing clinical instruction
- 1 year clinical experience
- Clinical competence, legal, and ethical behavior as expected by the profession
- Effective communication skills
- Effective behavior, conduct, and skill in interpersonal relationships
- Effective instructional skills
- Effective supervisory skills
- Appropriate skills in performance evaluation
- Work collaboratively with PTs to provide supervision for PTA students
- Seek assistance as needed to best support the PT/PTA student
