A
- hallucinations: disruption in information; auditory and visual most common
- Delusions: false beliefs that persist despite compelling evidence to the contrary
- Disorganized thinking: concrete, flight of ideas, circumstantiality, referential thinking (ideas of reference)
- Disorganized speech: pressures, clang association
- Disorganized behavior: aggression, agitation, wavy flexibility and catatonia

- used to control positive symptoms
- Complications: agranulocytosis, anticholinergic effects, EPS
- block dopamine, acetylcholine, histamine, and norepi receptors

How are second generation antipsychotics meds used for schizophrenia? give complications
A
- first line treatment for schizophrenia; for the patient receiving initial treatment or breakthrough episodes in clients on conventional meds
- relieves both positive and negative symptoms; decreases depression, anxiety and SI
- blocks mainly serotonin and dopamine
- complications: metabolic syndrome, orthostatic hypotension, anticholinergic effects and mild EPS (tremors)
