Psychotherapy intro Flashcards
key concept of classical conditioning
pairing two things not normally paired: conditioning a response from an atypical stimulus
define generalization
conditioned response to stimulus similar to conditioned stimulus
poor discrimination= inability to differentiated b/w CS and other stimuli
define extinction
CS no longer paired with unconditioned stimulus, decrease or loss of conditioned response
define reinforcer vs punisher
consequence that increases frequency of behavior
punisher- decreases frequency
positive vs negative reinforcer
positive- something new shows up
negative- something goes away that was present
positive reinforcer vs negative reinforcer
positive- reward
negative- relief
define shaping
reward increasingly accurate approximations of desired behavior
substance use connection to operant conditioning
begins as more of a positive reinforcement, then as dependence develops negative reinforcer
observational learning model
attention- retention- initiation- motivation
main figure for observational learning
bandura
main figures for operant conditioning
skinner and thorndike
main figures for classical conditioning
pavlov and watson (little albert)
behavioral therapy goal
change ineffective behavior, disrupt ineffective reinforcement schedule
3 part basic behavioral model
antecedent- behavior- consequence
cognitive and CBT goal
modify distorted cognition and change ineffective behaviors
