What is psychotherapy?
The systemic use of a relationship between a patient and a therapist - as opposed to physical and social methods- to produce changes in feelings, cognition and behaviour
What is considered type A psychological therapy?
Psychological treatment as a part of mental health care
What a CPN does - problem solving, giving different perspectives, allowing expression of feeling, managing distress
What is considered type B psychological therapy?
Eclectic psychological therapy and counselling.
More supportive and less directive.
What is considered type C psychological therapy?
Formal psychotherapies.
Following a clear theoretical frame

CBT
Psychoanalytic/ psychodynamic therapies
Systemic and family therapy
What is the ID?
The part of the personality we are born with. It is the demanding part. The ID is in the unconscious in that the demands are not conscious.
The ID works on the pleasure principle.
What is the EGO?
The rational part of the personality. It works on reality principles and tries to obtain for the ID what the ID wants.
The EGO develops from approx 18 months.
What is the superego?
The superego develops in the pallic stage of around 4 years of age. Works on the morality principle. Made up of the conscious, given to individuals by their parents and by society indicating what is right and wrong, and the ego ideal.
Ego ideal = the idea people have of what they should be like.
