What is a delusion?
Fixed false idea
NB not an overvalued idea (often seen in eating disorders ‘I am fat’)
What is a hallucination?
Experiencing something that appears real but does not exist outside the mind
What kind of hallucination is found in psychiatric/organic illness?
Psychiatric - auditory (normally 2nd person)
Organic - visual, tactile
What is an elemental hallucination?
Auditory - sounds rather than voices (whistling, buzzing)
What is a psuedohallucination?
Patient is aware that the stimulus is in the mind - often seen in obsessive disorders
What are the typical anti-psychotics?
Phenothiazine
Haliperidol
Sulpiride
What are the atypical anti-psychotics?
Respiridone
Olanzapine
Clozapine
Quetiapine
Why is clozapine only given for treatment resistant psychosis?
Can cause agranulocytosis
Which anti-psychotic is particularly assicated with lactation?

What are some common extrapyrimidal side effects of antipsychotics?
Tardive dyskinesia
Parkinsonism
Akathisia - restlessness
What heart condition should be checked for before starting anti-psychotics?
Long QT
