What is a hallucination?
Sensory perception in the absence of an external stimulus
Can be any of 5 modalities
Auditory most common
Visual more likely to be delirium
What is a delusion?
A fixed, false belief, despite evidence to the contrary and is out of keeping with a person’s sociocultural norms
How does schizotypal disorder present?
Eccentric behaviour, suspiciousness, unusual speech and thinking
NO delusions or hallucinations
What is schizoaffective disorder?
When someone presents with both symptoms of schizophrenia and a mood disorder (depression or mania) in the same episode of illness
So can be depressive type, manic type, or mixed
What type of hallucinations are most common in schizophrenia?
Auditory
In a 3rd person commentary format
What are some positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
Hallucinations Delusions Thought disorder Thought interference Lack of insight
What are some negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
Underactivity
Low motivation
Emotional numbness (blunted Affect)
Self neglect
What drugs can commonly cause drug induced psychosis?
Cannabis
Amphetamines
