Define psychosis
Mental state in which reality is distorted
Define delusions
fixed false belief which is firmly held despite evidence to the contrary + goes against the individual’s normal cultural + social belief system
Bizzare delusion
out of the realm of possibility
Non-bizarre delusions
beliefs of something occurring in a person’s life which isn’t out of the realm of possibility
Hallucinations
a perception in the absence of an external stimulus
Thought disorder
an impairment in the ability to form thoughts from logically connected ideas
Causes of psychosis
Organic → drug induced, iatrogenic (meds: levodopa, methyldopa, antimalarials), complex partial epilepsy, delirium, dementia, HD, SLE, Syphilis, Cushing’s…etc
Non-organic → schizophrenia, schizotypal disorder, schizoaffective disorder, puerperal psychosis (birth), delusional disorder, mood disorders w/ psychosis, acute psychotic episode…etc

What are positive symptoms?
An excess or distortion in normal functioning
Give examples of positive symptoms in schizophrenia

What sort of delusions do those with schizophrenia tend to have
third person auditory
