Acute and transient psychotic disorders - define
A
A psychotic episode presenting very similar to schizophrenia but lasting <1mth (therefore doesn’t meet criteria for schizophrenia of >1mth)
• Brief: resolve in days, weeks or mths

A
- Short-term admission (safety)
- Short-term antipsychotics, BDZs
- Follow-up → recurrence is high

Define Schizoaffective disorder
A
Characterised by features of both affective disorder + schizophrenia (both equally prominent)

Rx Schizoaffective disorder
A
- Treat as for schizophrenia
* Treat manic or depressive symptoms as outlined in bipolar disorder

Define Schizotypal disorder
A
- Latent schizophrenia
- Eccentric behaviour, suspiciousness, unusual speech, deviations of thinking + affect similar to those suffering w/ dementia
- NO hallucinations or delusions

Define Persistent delusional disorder
A
- The development of a single or set of delusions for a period of >3mths in which the delusion is othe only, or most prominent, Sx w/ other areas of thinking + functioning well preserved (unlike schizophrenia)
- Often persecutory, grandiose, hypochondiacal

Rx Persistent delusional disorder
A
• Respond well to antipsychotics

Define puerperal psychosis (post-partum)
A
- Acute onset of manic or psychotic episode shortly after childbirth (first 2weeks)
- 0.2% women
