Schizophrenia
The presence of delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech or behavior for a significant amount of a one month period.
Is schizophrenia genetic?
Yes
Schizophrenia epidemiology
1% of population
Men admitted from 8-25
Women admitted from 25 - 35
Facts about schizophrenia
Highly disabling
Persists throughout life
Only half of patients obtain tx
Schizophrenia dx
COntinuous signs of disturbance persisting for at least 6 months and within this at least one month of active phase sx.
Schizophrenia “negative” symptoms
Flattening, alogia, blocking, poor grooming, anhedonia, social withdrawl.
Schizophrenia positive sx
Delusions
Hallucinations
Normal brain structures and good response to tx =?
Patients with mostly positive syptoms
Abnormal brain structures and poor response to tx =?
Patients with predominantly negative sx.
Paranoid sype schizo
Preoccupation with one or more delusions and frequent auditory hallucinations.
Have organized speech, no flat affect.
Disorganized type schizo
Disorganized speech and behavior.
Flat affect
Catatonic type schizo
Motor immobility
Purposeless motor activity
Extreme negativism
Echolalia, echopraxia
4 components of a delusion
- False belief
- Based on incorrect inference on external reality.
- not consistent w/ intelligence or culture
- Cannot be corrected by reasoning
Why might a schozophrenic not take meds?
Because they have poor insight into the severity of their condition.
Schizo brain changes.
Lateral and 3rd ventricle enlargement.
Reduction in cortical volume
