Anorexia Nervosa
Refusal to maintain weight within a normal range for height and age.
More than 15% below ideal.
Amenorrhea for 3 months
Anorexia subtypes
Restricting
Binging/purging
Bulimia
Binging and purging (or non purging).
Generally don’t get as light as anorexics.
2 days/wk for 6 months
Eating disorder NOS
All criteria for anorexia but regular menses, regular weight.
Binges below diagnostic threshold
Bulemia physical exam
Parotid gland hypertrophy
Erosion of teeth
Osteopenia
Low bone density
A severe complication
Tx is weight gain, calcium, vitamin D, hormone replacement.
Secondary amenorrhea affects ___% of anorexics.
90%
Caused by low levels of FSH and LH.
Menses resumes within ___months of achieving 90% IBW
6 months
Cardiac complications w/ anorexia
Mitral valve prolapse
Long QT
Heart failure (greatest risk in first 2 wks of refeeding)
