psychopathology- defining abnormality S.I Flashcards
HAMBURGER, STRENGTH, REAL LIFE APPLICATION
A strength is that it has real life application.
For example, its used in the diagnosis of intellectual disability disorder where someone is given this label if their IQ falls under 69 or below.
Therefore, this is useful because its used as a part of clinical assessments
DOUBLE WHOPPER, LIMITATION, SOME ABNORMAL SHIT IS NICE
A limitation of the SI definition is that some behaviour is desirable.
Very few people have an IQ over 130 but many would like to be classed as a genius.
The SI definition doesn’t distinguish between desirable and undesirable behaviour
Therefore, we need a way of identifying infrequency and undesirable behaviours to give a more accurate definition of abnormal behaviour.
DOUBLE WHOPPER, LIMITATION, LABELLING
A limitation is that statistical infrequency involves labelling people based on their rarity, but not everyone benefits from this label.
Where someone is lving a happy life, this label levels no purpose.
For example, someone with a low IQ may not be distressed therefore incapable of work.
Therefore, label of having an intellectual disability disorder mightn’t necessarily benefit them.
This shows that labelling people as abnormal would negatively impact their self image.
HAMBURGER, LIMITATION, SUBJECTIVE
The statistical infrequency definition uses cut off points that are subjectively defined.
For example, people disagree over what counts as normal sleep.
However, since this is a symptom of depression, it is important to know where the cut off point lies for the diagnosis to be made.
Therefore, disagreements over cut off points make defining abnormality difficult in terms of SI.
