psychopathology-abnormality deviation from ideal mental health Flashcards
STRENGTH, HAMBURGER, COMPRHENSIVE
A strength of deviation from mental health as an explanation for deviation.. is that it is very comprehensive.
It covers a broad range of criteria for mental health and it could be argued that it covers most of the reasons that people seek help from MH services.
The sheer range of factors discussed in relation to Jahoda’s IMHC definition makes this a good tool for thinking abt MH.
LIMITATION, DOUBLE WHOPPER, SPECIFIC TO WEST
A limitation to this definition is that it is specific to Western Europe and North American cultures.
Jahoda’s criterion are based on western culture’s ideas and beliefs. Applying these to non-western cultures would be inappropriate.
For example, the idea of self-actualisation is thought of as too self-indulgent in some cultures.
Therefore, the criteria can only be applied within individualist cultures (culture bound).
HAMBURGER, LIMITATION, UNREALISTIC
A limitation of this definition is that Jahoda’s criteria are unrealistic.
Very few people meet all the criteria so by these standards, everyone is abnormal to some degree.
Therefore, its important to think about which criteria must be absent to judge someone’s behaviour as abnormal.
LIMITATION,HAMBURGER, ASSUMPTIONS
A limitation is that Jahoda assumes that ,H is something physical.
For example, in general physical causes are relatively easy to diagnose. BUT, not all M disorders have physical symptoms.
Therefore, its unlikely we can diagnose the 2 in the same way.
