- Responses are counted, graded etc. to produce a score to be analysed

- Large samples produce normative data, let anomalies be discovered so they can be helped, increases validity
- Strict conditions and standardized instructions increases reliability
- Best to use existing tests that have good reliability and validity

- Used to measure individual differences, experimental effects to intervene, look for change and make predictions about future behaviors or performance
- allows comparisons between individuals, groups and populations before and after an intervention
- Used to measure performance across multiple domains
