Definition of SE + ref
A stable sense of personal worth (Rosenberg, 1964)
1st line: Most common…
…psychological aspect that causes people to face difficulties - often ignored
2nd line: A critical…
…component of optimum functioning - physiologically and psychologically
What did Maslow (1987) state?
SE is part of our fundamental psychological needs - in his hierarchy of needs
People in our society have a need for a stable, firmly based, high evaluation of themselves
How SE conceptualisation is debtated?
1) Global SE - global evaluation of the self
2) Domain-specific SE - evaluation in a specific-relevant domain such as intellectual abilities (Swann & Bosson, 2010)
Elaborate on these 2 things:
Both have predictive ability for important outcomes
Global - several outcomes bundled together
Domain - outcomes measured at specific level (academic SE predicts academic outcomes
Can get different levels of SE - high to low
Low - associated with mental illness
Spectrum: Mild self-doubt to constant self-hatred
3 points to briefly mention for rest of essay
1) LSE can be detrimental and there is a need for practitioners to be able to identify it
2) PA may be able to help increase SE - although there is evidence against it being a good intervention
3) CBT alongside PA may be effective
