Psychology Self-esteem: Against PA as intervention Flashcards
Exercise and development of SE? (1 ref)
Scully et al. (1998) stated that little can be said in terms of exercise prescription in the development of self-esteem or its subcomponents because so few studies have considered such changes over time.
Psychologists think what about exercise and using it as an intervention for LSE?
Few consider exercise therapy worthwhile - although may be useful as adjunctive treatment
3 reasons not to use it as an intervention?
1) Relapse when exercise program stops
2) Number of barriers to participation - lack of support, anxiety in early stages
3) Meta-analysis (Spence & Poon, 1997) revealed weak link between PA and SE, suggesting it is inconsistent - due to SE being a stable construct and not easily changed by success in a single life domain
