PSYCHOLOGY REVSISON Flashcards
What are the 2 main divisions of the nervous system ?
Central Nervous system - Made up of your brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System- nerves that send messages to and from CNS to other parts of the body
What are the 2 divisions of the peripheral nervous system
Somatic - for voluntary responses
Autonomic- Involuntary control of automatic processes.
What can the autonomic nervous system be divided into
Sympathetic -Fight flight freeze response
Parasympathetic- rest and digest
What are sensory neurones
sensory neurones carry signals to your brain to help you touch, tase, smell, see
what are motor neurones
carries signals to your muscles or glands to help you move and function
4 different types of receptors
mechanoreceptors- hearing
Photoreceptors- Sight
Thermoreceptors- temperature
Chemoreceptors- smell and taste
axon
carries information away from the cell body to their ends.
Outline the steps involved in a stimulus passing through a synapse
- Electrical reaches axon terminal
- Vesicles containing NT move to the end of the nerve cell and
release NT into the synapse. - NT diffuses across the synapse.
- NT binds to receptors on the post
synaptic nerve triggering
an electrical signal
