Psychology 1 Flashcards
What are the 2 main divisions of the nervous system ?
Central Nervous system - Made up of your brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System- nerves that send messages to and from CNS to other parts of the body
What are the 2 divisions of the peripheral nervous system
Autonomic - controls involuntary body functions
Somatic- controls volunatary muscles and transmits sensory information to the cns
sensory nerve
sensory nerves carry signalds to your brain to help you touch, taste, smell and see
motor nerves
motor nerves carry signals to your muscles to help you move and function
4 different types of receptors
Mechanoreceptors - Hearing
Photorecpetors- sight
Thermoreceptors- Temprature
Chemoreceptors- Smell Taste
what are neurotransmitters
Chemical messengers that diffuse across a synapse
Outline the steps involved in a stimulus passing through a synapse
- Electrical reaches axon terminal
- Vesicles containing NT move to the end of the nerve cell and release NT into the synapse.
- NT diffuses across the synapse.
- NT binds to receptors on the post synaptic nerve triggering an electrical signal
Function of the frontal lobe
- motor functions
- language
- planning
-judgement
-problem solving
Function of Hypothalamus
- Sleep
-Regulation of body temp - Tells other glands what to do
Function of Occipital Lobes
Responsible for processing visual info from the eye
function of parietal lobes
- touch
-pressure
-temp
-pain
Function Medulla
Controls automatic functions, including heartbeat , breathing
