Psychology - Research methods - Inferential Analysis Flashcards
What are non-parametric tests?
chi squared, mann whitney, wilcoxon, spearman’s rho
How do you find out if the results are significant (show a real difference)?
Compare results gained from a statistical test to critical values
How do you find if a Spearman Rho test is significant?
Calculated value must be greater than or equal to the critical value
How do you find out if a Mann Whitney test is significant?
Calculated value must be less than or equal to the critical value
What is a critical value?
a numerical value that helps determine the significance of the results
When is a Spearman’s Rho test used?
When we test a relationship/correlation, using ordinal data, related pairs
What does N stand for in Spearman’s Rho?
Number of observations
What does d stand for in spearman’s rho?
Difference between the two ranks of each observation
When is a Mann Whitney test used?
Used for a test of difference, independent group design, ordinal data
What does Na stand for in a Mann Whitney U Test?
Total number of scores in condition A
What does Nb stand for in Mann Whitney U Test?
Number of scores in condition B
What does T stand for in Mann Whitney U test?
Sum of ranks in a smaller sample
How do you find out if a Chi Squared test result is significant?
Calculated value is greater or equal to the critical value
How do you find if a Wilcoxon test result is significant?
Calculated value is less than or equal to the critical value
When can Chi squared be used?
Test of association or difference, Independent measures design, nominal
What does the term observed value mean?
The calculated value
What are degrees of freedom?
the number of values in the final calculation of a statistic that are free to vary
When is a Wilcoxon test used?
Test of difference, repeated measures or matched, ordinal data
To work out wilcoxon matched pairs design results what do you calculate?
Positive ranks and negative ranks
What does T stand for in the wilcoxon test?
smaller value between sum of negative or positive ranks
What are the parametric statistical tests?
Related t-test, Unrelated t-test and Pearsons R
How should you find the significance of parametric tests (Related/unrelated t-test and Pearsons R)?
Calculated value must be greater than or equal to the critical value
When is the related t-test used?
Interval data, testing for a difference, repeated measures/matched pairs design
When is the unrelated t-test used?
Interval data, testing for a difference, independent measures design
