Q

what is drive theory?

A
  • A motivation that pushes you to reach a goal – Tension induced by need
-Whatever you are doing has been motivated by decreasing the tension in your body.
-We can be unconscious of these deep impulses to subside the tension inside us.
-Problem with this theory is that sometimes we do something to increase tension. (Ex. thrill seekers seek arousal and tension) It didn’t explain this very well. It also doesn’t explain why some people wont eat.

Q

what is optimal arousal theory?

A

-People are motivated to achieve and maintain an optimum level of bodily arousal
-Having to have the perfect amount of stimulation that we want. Some people like alot of stimulation, others get overwhelmed by a lot of stimulation.
If we have less stimulation then the optimal amount, we will seek out stimulation (Going on phones, do something to decrease boredom. We need some level of stimulation. We crave it.
If we have to much stimulation we start to withdraw ourselves to get back down to the optimal level

-External incentives pull people in a certain direction.
There is something external that pulls us towards our goal. There is something outside of yourself that we want to get to, we want to receive.
