E.G. Coach making athlete do 30 minute anaerobic training if athlete loses - If coach is overly negative, this can decrease motivation

- Self generated motivation
- Best motivation for long term goals
- Helps perform under pressure when extrinsic motivation is not around
- E.G. Athlete motivated by hitting personal best

- E.G. Motivated by money
- Best results when intrinsic and extrinsic motivation exist together
