Psychology Flashcards
hindbrain
located at the base of the brain near the back of the skull. Referred to as a brain stem. Controls survival functions and voluntary muscle movement
midbrain
area between the hindbrain and forebrain which is responsible for regulating movement and processing auditory and visual information which keeps us alert, awake and vigilant
forebrain
located above the midbrain, divided into two hemispheres and is the largest and most highly developed part of the brain. Is responsible for most complex processes Emotions, Motivations, learning,
cerebrum
two large hemispheres that cover the upper part of the brain. Contains 70% of the neurons in the CNS
left hemisphere
left side of the brain which specialises in verbal and analytical functions
right hemisphere
responsible for most non-verbal functions. Processes information simultaneously
frontal lobe
upper front half of each hemisphere responsible for complex mental abilities
parietal lobe
an area in each cerebral hemisphere behind the frontal lobe. Responsible for memory,
occipital lobe
an area located at the back of each cerebral hemisphere. Responsible for processing visual information
temporal lobe
area on both sides of the brain responsible for processing auditory information.
psychology
the systematic study of behaviour and mental processes including perception cognition and emotion
overt behaviours
observable behaviours clearly visible to others
covert behaviours
behaviours hidden from others but represented internally
8 intelligences
