psychological therapy: CBTp Flashcards
AO1- CBTp
- sz patients can be helped by identifying and changing their faulty cognitions
- target distorted beliefs and maladaptive thinking
- improves positive symptoms (hallucinations specifically)
- typically 1-1 for 12-16 sessions
- aims to establish links between the patients thoughts, feelings, actions and symptoms
- techniques: distractions, reality testing and relaxation
- patients take an active part as are given homework between sessions e.g. keeping diary of hallucinations
- at the start of each session, the patient takes an assessment that gives them a score which is used for monitoring.
- ABCDE model
AO3: strength- CBT is effective when used alongside drugs
however, is it both treatments combined or CBT alone that is effective?
P: CBT is effective when used alongside drugs
E: psychologists found that people with sz receiving 20 sessions of CBT alongside taking antipsychotic drugs made more significant improvements than schizophrenics receiving drug therapy or counselling alone
L: shows when used together they are more effecting when it comes to psychological therapy
HOWEVER, can’t distinguish whether it is the combination of both treatments or just CBT alone which is being effective, therefore firm conclusions cant be made.
AO3: limitation- CBT is more expensive
However, cost benefit analysis
P: CBT is more expensive than drug therapy
E: meaning it is less regularly available, the reduced healthcare budget may explain this.
E: only 1 in 10 are offered CBT in the UK. Only 7% of sz were offered CBT
L: shows CBT is not very accessible
HOWEVER, cost benefit analysis suggests it is cheaper in the long run to give schizophrenics CBTp as it is less likely to cause relapses and ending up in institution which costs more money
AO3: limitation- individual differences- wide range of techniques and symptoms included in studies on CBT
P: wide range of techniques and symptoms included in studies
E: they vary widely from one case to another
E: researcher points out that different studies have involved the use of different CBT techniques and patients with different combinations of positive and negative symptoms.
L: makes it hard to say how effective CBT will be for a particular person with SZ
AO3: strength- less side effects than drugs
P: CBT has fewer side effects compared to drug therapy
E: CBT does not pose the risk of psychical problems such as tardive dyskinesia or diabetes
E: makes it more effective as the symptoms are still being targeted without side effects
