Psychological Therapies For depression Flashcards
How does this make it depression in today’s society
This belief will grow with the child as it develops into their personality and will stick with them as a central aspect and the individual will feel anger but the anger will be directed inwards
Psychodynamic theory
Goes back to Freuds ideas that depression is caused by a wrong doing in the child’s psychosexual development if…
Conflict occurs- needs we’re not met
Too strict - beliefs that others don’t care
This will lead to
An individual feeling unworthy of love but craves the love and attention. They will have low self esteem and directs anger towards themselves.
DEPRESSION
How can it explain depression later on in life.
If someone experinces a loss e.g. Losing a job, a child leaves home, a loss of a loved one. They may feel resentful at being deserted. This tacks back to the oral stage and they will turn anger in on themselves and face depression
What is aim of therapy
- aim is to uncover unconscious conflicts and anxieties that are causing disturbances
- client is encouraged to discuss and examine these unconscious processes in order to release the power they exert over their behaviour (catharsis)
- long term form of therapy (can take years)
What techniques used.
Free association - ink block tests. Client asked to see what they see
Word association- client asked to describe what comes to mind when presented with unrelated random words.
Dream analysis- recounting of dreams allows analysis to uncover hidden words or meanings.
Hypnosis. - alter the clients state of mind to take then back to the oral stage of development where depression began.

CBT
Created by Aaron neck who wanted his clients to archive remission and prevent relapse
What were his two steps
1) help my them to identify where their thoughts, beliefs and expectations are irrational and
2) change those irrational thoughts to rational ones by replacing them so life events are interpreted differently.
By doing so what is the therapist treating.
Origionals cause of depression. Relapse is rare.
Why is a rapport needed during CBT
CBT focuses on past experiences and interpersonal perceptions of events. Therefore a rapport is needed because the client must be able to open up to his therapist to allow them to work as a team and explain exactly how the client is feeling
1st main factors of CBT including homework
Thought catching - link between thoghts and feelings. Homework includes noting any distressing events and the immediate negative thoughts felt. E.g. If they over hear a convo and automatically think it was about them CBT will challenge that association with ‘where is the evidence they were talking about me’ ‘what’s the worst if they were’
This way clients are trying out new ways of behaving by replacing dysfunctional thoughts
2nd
Behavioural activation. This is based on the idea that being active leads to rewards and therefore an antidote to depression.
Depressed people no longer take part in pleasurable activities.
CBT therapist and client identify potentially pleasurable activities and deal with any cognitive obstacles such as I won’t be able to do that
A02
Long term solution
Treats cause so depression shouldn’t be there once treatment stops
Expensive
No dependency to CBT
Not sure if actual CBT stops depression or just having someone to talk to
Docs don’t promote it.
March et.al found 81% of patients after 36 weeks of treatment responded positively
