Depression is a disorder o
Like neurochemical and psychodynamic believes the person is ill and needs treating.
Different to evo which believes depression is adaptive
According to beck there are three types of faulting thinking processes which could lead to depression all of which derive from experiences. Firstly
Negative cognitive triad.
Negative thoughts about self - I am worthless
world- I am rubbish at everything I try
and future - I will always fail
These can explain specific symptoms of depression such as loss of interest in usually pleasurable activities
If someone thinks if they go out they will just upset someone they will refrain from going out with friends.
Secondly silent assumption which everyone has but in depressed people are unrealistic e.g
I must be liked by everyone
I must excel in everything I do
These lead to low mood and low self esteem because
It is unlikely these unrealistic standards won’t be met thus the individual feels constantly not good enough. These are hard to change as they have been internalised from a young age.
Third type of faulty thinking is distorted information processing. One example is catastrophising
This is exaggerating a minor setback until it appears to be a complete disaster. This could explain the low mood and low self esteem as the catastrophising would result in the individual received more bad in there life than there really is.
Similarly personalising which is a tendency to assume more of the blame or responsibility for an event than is reasonable could also explain low self esteem because
The individual will assume personal responsibility for anything bad that happens even if it’s not their fault hence they feel bad about themselves
Diaries is stress model of depression why
All three faulty thinking grouped together may not cause depression but increase once vulnerability to depression. Thinking style coupled with an environmental trigger such as a bad event would result of feelings of depression
