what is CBT?
-method for treating schiz based on cog + behavioural techniques and links to both cognitive + behavioural approaches in psych.
how long does CBT take?
5-20 sessions of CBT in either group or individual settings
aim of CBT
-identify irrational thoughts and change them
-discussions come from therapist and patient as they will try to get patient to think about how likely their beliefs are to be considered
how does CBT help schizophrenia?
-does not treat schizophrenia nor ‘cure’ it as it can only help to manage symptoms.
-helps them take part in goal directed behaviour and be less scared of their symptoms.
-anxiety reduced by explaining existence of hallucinations and delusions and trying to show them that theyre not real.
what is family therapy?
-carried out with all/some members of schizophrenic individuals family.
-the aim is to improve communication within family and reduce stress of living as a family.
-focus on reducing levels of expressed emotion within family
-aims to reduce relapse rates and re-admission to hospital
what are the strategies for family therapy?
- the therapist forming a therapeutic alliance with family members
-reducing stress of caring for a relative with schizophrenia
-improving ability of the family to anticipate and solve problems
-reduction of anger and guilt in family members
-helping family members achieve a balance between caring for the individual with schizophrenia and maintaining their own lives
-improving families beliefs about and behaviour towards schizophrenia.

-change maladaptive behaviour that people have developed through spending long periods of time in psychiatric hospitals.
-dont treat schiz. work by modifying behaviour and removing bad habits.
-helps to improve patients quality of life. increase likelihood they can live outside hospital setting
what did Bird et al say about family therapy?
FT reduces stress levels whilst increasing chances of ppl complying with mediation combination likely to reduce likelihood of relapse and readmission to hospital.
