psychological explanation- family dysfunction Flashcards
what is family dysfunction?
suggests that childhood experiences and dynamic of family home like hostility, tension, conflict can trigger/influence SZ
3 ideas under family dysfunction?
- schizophrenic mother
- double-blind theory
- expressed emotion
what is the schizophrenic mother?
Fromm Reichmann 1948
- certain characteristics of parents: cold, rejecting, controlling, creates family climate of tension + secrecy
how does schizophrenic mother lead to SZ?
distrust, paranoid delusions lead to SZ
what is the double blind theory?
- mixed messages/signals
Bateson et al
- emphasises communication styles
- child recvieve mixed messages whilst growing up and if get things wrong and recieve punishment by parents withdrawing love leads to social withdrawal to escape the situation
- risk factor. not a direct cause
how can the situations in double blind lead to SZ?
development of symptoms like delusions and disorganised thinking
case study evidence from Bateson?
- recovering SZ visted by mother
- she gave him mixed messages-> he embraced her warmly and she stiffened then said ‘dont you love me anymore?’
- he felt confused and relapsed
what is expressed emotion?
when families constantly show negative emotions (criticisms + hostility)
elements of expressed emotion?
- verbal criticism - sometimes w violence
- hostility towards child, includes anger
- emotional over-involvement
how can expressed emotion lead to SZ?
- cause serious stress which can be cause of relapse in patients with SZ but can also be a trigger of SZ of those with vunerability
what does the theory fail to explain?
- why all children in dysfunctional fam dont develop SZ
- they arent a certantity- its primarily a trigger
- lack of causation for those who dont develop it- limited expl, ignores biology.
- better way= interactionist
how is the theory problematic?
- rather than dyfunctions within family causing SZ, having SZ within a family leads to dysfunctions
- issues with cause and effect
- limits our understanding
- victim blames parent - SZ mother
what support is there?
Read et al
- studies of child abuse and SZ-> 69% female SZ history of physical abuse, sexual abuse/both in childhood
- supports dysfunctions cause SZ
- counter -> info gathered AFTER devel of SZ= disorted recall, questions validity as it directs attention to abuse, could be other reasons
