What are Psychological Disorders?

A

Psychological disorders are patterns of thoughts, feelings and actions that are deviant, not normal, distressful, to the person and the people around, and dysfunctional, do not allow the person to function adequately in their everyday roles. Patterns are defined by consistent behavior.

What is Abnormality Defined by?

A
  1. Statistical Infrequency
  2. Failure to conform to social norms, that are defined by the memebrs of society, and lack of conformity is abnormal
  3. Failure to function adequately, abnormality is when a person cannot go about their day without feeling distressed.
  4. Deviation from good metal health, which is seen in a good sense of identity and self, and a grip in reality, and autonomy

  1. Medical Model, look at p.d. as a diseases, diagnosis is worked at in therapy, and a prognosis is formed

A

Anxiety Disorders are characherized by worrisome thoughts, chrinic edgyness and vigilance wich can range from mild to sever. It activates the fight or flight response.

What is GAD?

A

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a pattern of frequent and persistent worry which is out of proportion given the event/circumstance which are causing said worry. People with GAD might not acknowledge that the worry is excessive but are bothered by the degree of the worry.

What is the Occurrence of GAD?

A

People need to feel this worry ‘more days than not’ for a period of at least 6 months to be diagnosed with GAD. In addition, they must have 3 out of 6 symptoms which include: muscle tension, insomnia, restlessness, fatigue. GAD is not caused by one specific stimulus, the worry is constant.

What is a Panic Attack?

A

A panic attack is the sudden presence of anxiety as well as a range of physical (shortness of breath or dizziness) and cognitive (fear of an impending catastrophy, fear of having a heart attack) symptoms.

What is Panic Disorder?

A

Panic Disorder anxiety caused by frequent panic attacks which lead an individual to change their behavior in an attempt to stop having panic attacks. Panic Disorder can lead to agoraphobia, as a peson might fear leaving the house as they might not want to be seen as vulnerable by others if a panic attack were to occur.
