- Problems happen TO a family (not caused by the family)
- The search for causes within family only aroused guilt and defensiveness
- Evidenced based practice (can demonstrate improvement for MD and Bipolar)

To supplement and renew family resources; to build on family strengths. Not to cure psychiatric symptoms but give them hope to have a reasonbly stable life together

Practice of Psychoeducational Family Therapy
A
- therapist= collaborative partner
- work with 1 family OR many families
- not necessarily successful with schizophrenics
- emphasize skills, problem management, and explicit description of treatment goals

- 1 day survival skills work shop (ie how to cope with schizophrenia)
- after discharge regular outpatient sessions to ensure stability and avoid relapse
- Treatment like Structural family therapy
