Behavioral Family Therapy Flashcards
What is the key principle of Behavioral Family Therapy?
Behavior will change as you change the contingencies of reenforcement
What are the 10 underlyina assumptions of Behavioral Family Therapy?
- All behavior (norma & abnormal) is acquired & maintained in identical ways (not b/c of internal motivations)
- Behavior disorders represent learned maladaptive behaviors only they do not represent unseen reasons or causes
- Maladaptive behavior (symptoms) is itself the disorder, not a manifestation of an underlying disorder or disease.
- Focus on determining current determinants; it is not essential to discover the exact situation or set of circumstances in which the disorder was learned.
- Since maladaptive behavior was learned, it can be unlearned and replaced with adaptive patterns.
- Treatment involves the application of experimental psychological findings. Treatment emphasizes use of a methodlogy that has objective scientific proof for effectiveness.
- (Like IPCM)assessment is an ongoing part of treatment.
- Behavioral therapy focuses on here and now problems.
- Treatment outcomes are evaluated based on measurable changes.
- Research on specific therapeutic techniques is continuously carried out by behavioral therapists.
How do symptoms develop according to Behaviorlal Family Therapists?
- daused by dysfunctional patterns of reinforcement
- maintained by environmental events PRECEDING and FOLLOWING each member’s behavior.
- Events/contingencies, along with mediating cognitions, determine FORM and FREQUENCY of behavior.
What is an example of how symptoms develop according to Behavioral Family Therapists?
Boy steals $ from mom’s purse: must ask what happened before th boys behavior and what happens after the behavior. Before: mom leaves purse open and boy takes $
After: conflict results from the theft
What are the Goals of Behavioral Family Therapy?
- To modify current behavior pattern to achieve symptom relief (reduce or replace the behavior that is distressful)
- Goals are defined by client. (there are no prior conceptions of what is normal family development.)
How Does Change Take Place according to Behavioral Family Therapy?
Change occurs through the interventions of
- clinical procedures-skills &training
- systematic desensitization (especially for anxiety)
- reinforcement (positive reinforcement much more effective than punishment)
- contingency contracting
- modeling (therapist models behavioral goals)
- shaping (shape behavior in intermediate steps; don’t make big changes all at once)
- cognitive restructuring (adaptive replacement of distorted cognitions)
Who is Howard Markman?
A researcher that studied what causes marital distress. He developed a communication and conflict resolution program for the prevention of marital distress. The “speaker-listener” technique: while one person is speaking the other listens and then repeats what the speaker said back to the speaker.
What did Gottman and Krokoff contribute to Behavioral Couples Therapy?
From their studies, they found that the absence of conflict does not mean that a couple is doing well; they can be in a withdrawal pattern. They also found that it is important to understand the the individual’s physiological responses during conflict and suggested taking a break because when you are very angry it is difficult to calm yourself back down immediately.
Who Developed Cognitive-Behavioral Marital Therapy?
Baucom & Epstein
What is Cognitive Behavioral Marital Therapy?
The breaking apart of Cognitions, Behaviors, and Emotions to adress marital issues
