Q

Give an example for the supporting argument of mothers should still be PCG due to attachment to the child.

A

Hazan and Shaver - ‘love quiz’. They aimed to investigate correlations between attachment types and romantic relationships. They found those with secure attachment types as a child form secure, healthy and stable relationships, whereas, those with an insecure attachment form obsessive and jealous relationships. This supports Bowlby’s theory and shows the impact of internal working model.

They used interviews to see if attachment type in infancy influence adult relationships. In conclusion they suggested that there was no correlation between the attachment with the parents, their future relationships are not affected by it.

Q

Give a social implication for the opposing argument of mothers shouldn’t still be PCG due to attachment to the child.

A

Takes pressure off mothers. If mothers feel that they can look after the child but not have an emotional bond with them then they may feel less guilty knowing that it wont affect their future relationships. This allows the mother to be able to go back to work or have more freedom to look after their child.

Q

Give an example for the supporting argument that mothers should be PCG due to hormones.

A

The NHS recommends that babies should be breastfed for the first 6 months of life as it provides them with a healthy start. The release of oxytocin during breastfeeding/giving birth creates a bond between them. This can only be done by the mother so supports the idea that women should be the PCG.
