refusing to acknowledge some aspect of reality meaning now having to deal with painful aspects of experience
repression
refers to blocking of unacceptable thoughts forcing distress out the conscious mind
displacement
feeling unable to confront the true source of distressing emotion and transferring feelings onto another target

ID- unconscious present from birth, pleasure principle
EGO- develops around the age of 2, works on the reality principle
SUPEREGO- formed at the phallic stage 4/5 it is a internalised sense of right and wrong
