Psychodynamic approach Flashcards
Summary
Involves explaining the internal processes of change and development
What does the approach help explain?
The dynamics of behaviour and forces that drive one to behave in a certain manner
Dynamics?
The things driving us to behave in a certain way
1st assumption?
Human behaviour is influenced by different levels of consciousness and most of what goes on in the mind, we are not consciously aware of
What did Freud propose to help explain the idea of different levels of consciousness?
The analogy of the iceberg
What 3 levels did the ‘iceberg’ have
- Above surface=conscious
- Below surface=pre-conscious
- Deep below surface=unconscious
What does conscious thinking involve?
Rational decision making, ideas, thoughts and emotions
What does pre-conscious thinking involve?
Thoughts, memories + emotions, not currently aware of but can call to surface at any time?
What does unconscious thinking involve?
Feelings, emotions and memories- unaccessible as blocked from own awareness as too damaging to bring to consciousness.
How can material in the unconsciou be brought to the surface?
In symbolic form e.g. dreams, random thoughts and slips of the tongue (Freudian slips)
What else does the unconsious involve?
Biologically-based urges e.g.
- Sex
- Agression
2nd assumption?
Human personality is made of the three seperate parts (the tripartite)
What is the adult personality made of?
3 parts, developed at different stages of early childhood
What 3 parts is the adult personality made of?
- Id
- Super-ego
- Ego
Id?
- In the unconscious
- Includes primitive sex +agression drive +desires
- Unsocialised, present from birth
- We learn to control it as we grow
