- Denial - Refusing to accept reality
- Displacement - Redirecting problems elswhere e.g. on person

- The Id (Pleasure principle) - evolutionary drive to satify desires
- The ego (Reality principle) - Attempts to balance Id desires with Superego morals
- The superego (Morality principle) - conscience and ego-idea, moral standards learned through parents.

What are the 5 stages of psychosexual developement?

- Oral (0-2yrs) - Mouth is focal point of sensation, sexual energy is expressed
- Anal (2-3yrs) - Child learns soceital demands and controlls toilet needs
- Phallic (3-6yrs) - Oedipus complex - sexual energy focused on genitalia.
- Latent (6-12yrs) - Conflicts of previous stages repressed - child forgets past stages - halt in sexual development
- Genital (12+ yrs) - Culmination of psychosexual development - energy fixes in genitals. Directs towards adult life (reproduction)
