What is the assumption Influence of childhood experiences?
Freud suggested experiences in childhood shape our adult personality.
Psychological development takes place in key psychosexual stages.
Each stage represents the fixation of libido on a different area of the body.
What is the 1st psychosexual stage ?
Oral 0-18 months
Origin of libido is mouth
E.g sucking, swallowing, chewing
Seen in Breast feeding and weaning onto solid food
What is outcome of fixation in stage 1 ?
Frustration: envy and sarcasm
Overindulgence: gullible and needy
What is the 2nd psycho sexual stage ?
Anal 18 months - 3 years
Withholding or playing with faeces.
Seen in potty training.
What is the outcome of fixation of stage 2 ?
Frustration: stubborn and overly tidy.
Overindulgence: messy and disorganised.
What is the 3rd psychosexual stage ?
Phallic (3-5 years)
Involves genitals and masturbation.
Oedipus complex leads to superego and gender identity.
Outcome of fixation of 3rd stage ?
May have problems with sexuality and building/ maintaining relationships in adult life.
May be vain.
What is the 4Th psychosexual stage ?
Latency 5 years- puberty
Origin of libido- little/ no sexual motivation
Occurs when gaining knowledge and understand of the world.
What is the outcome of fixation at 4th stage ?
None as no pleasure focus.
What is the final psychosexual stage ?
Genital puberty onwards
Libido: genitals (heterosexual intercourse)
Outcome of fixation in final stage ?
Well developed adult personality
What can occur if problems are faced during the psycho sexual stages?
Child can become fixated with body sort associated with that stage.
What ways can fixation occur ?
Frustration- stage not resolved as needs of child have not been met.
Overindulgence- needs of child have been more than satisfied. Child reluctant to move to next stage.
