What is repression?
A defence mechanism used to repress dark thoughts into the unconscious mind
What is denial?
A type of defence mechanism. Refusing to accept reality so as to avoid having to deal with any painful feelings.
What is displacement?
A defence mechanism which involves the redirecting of thoughts or feelings in situations where the person feels unable to express themselves therefore they take it out on a weak target
What are the 3 defence mechanisms
Repression
Displacement
Denial
What is a limitation of the psychodynamic approach?
It is culture biased as it only works as a European issue due to places around the world e.g. China see speaking out as causing more mental health issues due to the feedback received
What is the iD?
The instinctual drive present from birth which helps biological motivation and seeks instant pleasure.
What is the Ego?
The balance/referee between the iD and the Superego to determine behaviour
What is the Superego?
The Superego is run by the morality principle, it is the moral bias which is balanced by the ego. Strong SuperEgo’s can lead to OCD etc. B
What are assumptions made about the psychodynamic approach?
The Oedipus Complex focuses on young boys wanting to enter intercourse with their mothers
It is full of sexual fantasies
What are the methods used in the psychodynamic approach?
Psychoanalysis
Dream analysis
Symbol analysis
What is the conscious mind?
The thoughts, feelings and perceptions that we are aware of.
What is the unconscious mind?
The inaccessible memory within our brain which controls daily behaviour
