Psychodynamic Flashcards
Id
Pleasure principle. Natural instincts, gratification, satisfaction, babies “bundles of id”
Aggression may come crom ID frustration- the ID not getting what it wants
Ego
Reality Principle. Environment and situation. Must satisfy demands of the id and superego.
Superego
Morality Principle. Learnt, conscience, voice of parents, right and wrong, socially acceptable…controls you with guilt, you develop this from your parents
Catharsis
behaviour which displaces the aggression of the Id somewhere else which is more morally acceptable for the superego. For example, feeling angry with a friend but taking it out in the gym later.
Ice Berg model
most thoughts are in the unconscious mind that we cant access below the surface.
Thanatos
the source of aggressive impulses ‘the death instinct’
+Reductionist
This theory doesn’t reduce a complex behaviour with many influences to one simple cause. The Id is biological, superego is learnt and the ego is the free will of the person.
+Deterministic
This theory takes into account the free will and choice of a person. For example, you may have aggressive urges but your ego will choose whether to satisfy your Id or be cathartic.
+Falsifiability
Although many criticisms for a lack of evidence this theory makes logical sense and can’t be proven but also can’t be disproven.
-Scientific
little/no scientific research. Freud based theories on case studies of women in a mental hospital in Vienna but they weren’t recorded scientifically
-Subjectivity
The conscious mind can’t be measured or tested objectively unlike testosterone levels and brain scans.
