Types of Defense Mechanisms
Intellectualizing: thinking about something threatening while keeping emotional distance from the feelings that come from it
Projection: attributing a threatening feeling or motive to another person
Reaction formation: denying a threatening feeling and saying you feel the opposite
Drive Theory
Oral (Birth-18 months)
- oral pleasure and fixation
Anal (18m-3 yrs)
- Anal retentive vs expulsive
Control Phallic (3-6) - Oedipus Complex
Control Latency (6 yrs - puberty) - sexuality is repressed to focus on other things
Control Genital (puberty onward) - adult sexuality

Comes from Structural theory
Id: Unconscious, Pleasure principle
Ego: Mediates wants and reality
Superego: Moral consciousness, can become harsh and rigid

- Confrontation then interpretation
“I notice this pattern happening” - Create very secure holding environment where maladaptive patterns can happen
-Create emotionally corrective experience - do this by not going along with their pattern and discussing the pattern - Very clear line of questioning
