Describe the role of the unconscious
Most of the mind is made up of the unconscious mind, which has a significant influence on our behaviour and personality.
What does the unconscious contain?
Threatening and disturbing memories which have been repressed.
How can the unconscious be accessed?
Via dreams, slips of the tongues etc……
What does the preconscious mind contain?
Contains thoughts which are currently not conscious
List the three parts of personality according to Freud

Describe the ID

What are defence mechanisms?
Used by the ego to keep the ID in check and reduce anxiety. Repression, denial and displacement

Introduced the idea of the psychotherapy and psychoanalysis
1st attempt to treat mental disorders psychologically rather than physically —> assess unconscious eg. Dream analysis.
Basis of talking therapies eg.counselling

Freudians therapists claim success for many clients with mild neurosis, psychoanalys regarded as inappropriate and harmful for people experiencing serious mental disorders.
Suggests this therapy may not apply to all mental disorders
Explanatory power (strength) (AO3)
Freud is controversial in many ways and bizarre but has a huge influence on psychology. Alongside behaviourism it was a key force in psychology for first half of 20th century.
Significant in making connections from childhood to later development.
