Cognative Flashcards

1
Q

What are the assumptions of the behaviourist approach?

A

Internal mental processes can be studied through interferences about what is going on in peoples minds.

Q

What is the role of schema in the cognitive approach.

A

Schema is a package of ideas and info developed through experience. Acts as a mental framework for interpretation of incoming information received by the cognitive system. As we grow up schema becomes more detailed and sophisticated enabling us to process lists of information as a mental shortcut.

Q

What is meant by the cognitive approach being a theoretical and computer model?

A

It is an information processing approach. Suggests information flows through cognitive systems in a sequence of stages. Eg. Multi-store model. This is the way computers work applied to AI.

Q

What does cognitive neuroscience do?

A

Maps brain area to specific cognitive functions. Eg. Research into how Broca’s area can impair speech production.

Q

Explain one strength of the cognative approach (links to science) (AO3)

A

Scientific methods

Uses objective scientific methods. They employ highly controlled rigorous methods of study so they can infer cognitive processes. Use of lab studies to produce reliable and objective data.

Emergence of cognitive neuroscience enables biology and psychology to then enhance scientific study.

Q

What is the counterpoint? (AO3)

A

Relies on inference of mental processes than direct observation of behaviour. Occasionally suffer from being too abstract and theoretical in nature. Use artificially stimuli in experiments

Lacks external validity

Q

Real world application (AO3)

A

Practical application

Probably the most dominant approach in psych today. Applied to a wide range of practical and theoretical contexts eg, use in AI. Also applied to treatment of depression.
